Open to all who are coping with grief and loss. Grief and loss can be a difficult journey.

The creative process is a tried and true method to encourage communication, identify emotions, and foster healing. Building on this concept, Arts as Medicine offers this six- week series to promote Healing the Heart using the arts. Through music, visual arts, movement, writing, drama, and storytelling, we feel emotional release, inspiration, a sense of community, and a remembering for the beauty of life even in the midst of our darkest hours. We somehow know that all is not lost and are rejoined to hope.

Led by Delores Dalrymple Gulledge, Ph.D.

Six-week program meets on Mondays beginning April 4, 2016. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. for informal sharing and opportunities to explore materials at the Resource Center. Each class will explore a new expressive arts opportunity. Give yourself permission to step outside your comfort zone, explore something different, make new discoveries about yourself. This series is designed for adults. You do not need to be an artist to participate.

“The purpose of art is to wash the dust of daily life off our souls.” – Pablo Picasso

  • Week 1: HAVEN - April 4th
In this introductory session, you will learn the purpose and the process of the Healing and the HeART series. A key part of healing is learning how to understand and evaluate our reactions and responses to grief. Making this journey with those whom we can trust with ourselves and our grief is crucial to our progress. We will discuss and begin building a community of healing.

  • Week 2: WRITING - April 11th
Expressing ourselves in personal writing makes us vulnerable to our emotions. The key is learning how to be honest with the page. We will discuss the importance of journaling and talk about ways to get started on a healing journal.

  • Week 3: MUSIC - April 18th
Grief has a beat, and everyone's grief beat is different. Join us as we welcome musician Cyndi Boot, who will help us explore and enjoy the rhythmic healing of drumming to relieve stress and to "beat" the hurt out of grief.

  • Week 4: MOVEMENT - April 25th
Moving helps us loosen grief's grip on our bodies. Come learn how movement arts help us heal, both physically and emotionally.

  • Week 5: DRAMA - May 2nd
In this session, "acting out" is encouraged! We will explore how storytelling and drama can help us express and respond to grief.

  • Week 6: VISUAL & TACTILE ART - May 9th
In our final session, Artist Bev Barbee will teach us how to make symbolic images from the broken and scattered parts of our grief. We will make a mixed-media collage that we can see and touch to remind us that what is broken can be restored.
